Changing port settings
It is possible that you may have other applications to manipulate or examine
emails. For example, some older anti-virus applications will create private
mail servers on your machine to intercept all mail before passing it through
to your email application. If this occurs, there will be a port conflict
and whoever starts first, wins. To address this issue, ChoiceMail gives
you the option of changing the ports it uses for mail. However, if
you change the ports, you must make sure to change the respective ports
in your email application otherwise your email application will not be able
to communicate with ChoiceMail.
- Incoming mail server port
Port 110 is used by default for connecting to POP3
servers
- Outgoing mail server port
Port 25 is used by default for connecting to SMTP
servers.
If you need to reset the ports back to their default
settings, you can click the "Use defaults" button to do this
quickly.
Overriding
the default email client
When you wish to open your email client from within ChoiceMail, ChoiceMail
determines the correct mail application by examining your registry for
the email application associated with your 'mailto:' verb.
However, in some cases, the defaults may not be sufficient, or they may
not even work properly if your registry was changed at some point. As
of version 1.4, you can tell ChoiceMail to use a different email application
when it opens by specifying the full path and file name to your email
application as well as parameters needed by that email application.
If you press the "Choose..." button, ChoiceMail will display
a list of email applications that are known to be installed on your machine
and you can simply select one them (picture).
Warning: changing the default email application opened by ChoiceMail does
not cause that email application's accounts to be configured to communicate
with ChoiceMail. If you decide to use a different email application, make
sure that you configure that email application to work with ChoiceMail.
Please see the ChoiceMail documentation for
more details.
Parameters
In most cases, the default parameters that appear when you select an email
application will work fine. However, you should refer to the documentation
for your specific email application to see if you should different parameters.
For example, Eudora users can control the initial defaults used to open
Eudora by including an alternate Eudora.INI file as a parameter. Please
refer to your Eudora documentation for details on how to specify an alternate
INI file.
If you are using Microsoft Outlook, ChoiceMail will create a completely
new Outlook window everytime you invoke it. However, if you use the parameter
/recycle,
then the same Outlook window will be reused each time.
Outlook Express normally does not require any parameters. We have determined
that specifying invalid paramers for Outlook Express can cause your computer
to crash. This is a problem with Outlook Express, not with ChoiceMail.
If you are using Netscape or Mozilla, you should add the parameter -mail
so that the "Messenger" application runs rather than the browser.
Automatically
opening your email application
If you set this parameter to a non-zero value, your email application
will open automatically whenever ChoiceMail detects that at least that
number of messages are available to be read. Setting the value to 0 disables
this feature.
