I have ChoiceMail installed but I just started getting spam. Why?

This is probably the most common question we ever see but it's easy to find out why it's happening. Please see our technote on this issue

When I click on a link to respond to a challenge from a ChoiceMail user, my browser won't open.

Your OS is most likely misconfigured. Please see this technote

ChoiceMail stopped retrieving mail from AOL

Please see our technote on this issue

I get a socket error

A socket error means that ChoiceMail One was unable to connect to the internet for one reason or another. The usual reasons are:

1) Your firewall is preventing ChoiceMail One from connecting to the internet. The most common socket error is 10061 - connection refused. See Firewalls and server permissions for more info on this issue.

2) You specified an invalid server name for the POP3 or SMTP server so that the server could not be found. Check
carefully that your POP3 server and SMTP server names are correct.

3) You have a port conflict due to some other application.

ChoiceMail won't retrieve mail from HotMail, MSN, Yahoo or AOL

Make sure that you are not using an ad-blocker or cookie manager that is blocking cookies from these sites. If you are using such a tool, you will need to allow cookies from these sites to be stored on your computer otherwise ChoiceMail One will not be able to access those sites to retrieve mail.

The trial version (or my previous version) worked perfectly but when I installed the retail version (or upgraded to the latest version), it didn't work or it generated access violations.

Please see the technote here.

ChoiceMail never sends out registration requests

Please check the following items:
1) Make sure that ChoiceMail is using the correct SMTP server for your internet connection.
2) If the icon associated with every new sender has a red border, then the most likely possibility is that ChoiceMail does not know your own email address. This can happen for two reasons - a) your full email address was not specified in the POP3 accounts configuration or b) you have multiple email addresses (aliases) and you have not configured ChoiceMail so that it recognizes those aliases.

ChoiceMail fails to download some email

Before going any further, make sure you have downloaded and are running the latest version of ChoiceMail.

I am receiving duplicate emails in my AOL account

Please see the technote "AOL users receive duplicate messages"

After a manual refresh, ChoiceMail stops downloading messages

This problem occurs only in version 1.300 and has already been fixed as of 1.301 . If you are already running version 1.300 you can get the update by clicking on Help | Check for updates. If you are running a version older than 1.3 or you prefer to download the updater manually, you can get it here.

When I press Test to check an account, ChoiceMail fails to connect
First - MAKE SURE YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET! You must stay connected to the internet while you are testing your accounts with ChoiceMail.

Once you are certain you are connected to the Internet (you are connected right now if you are able to read this), if your test still fails, then make sure that you entered the correct information for your username, password and pop3 server. In particular, your password is most likely to be case-sensitive so make sure that you typed the password characters in the right case. You might want to check your CAPS LOCK key to make sure you don't have CAPS enabled inadvertently.

Unable to access mail through SSL or secure password authentication

Some POP servers require a secure password authentication. You must have version 1.4 or later of ChoiceMail to access such servers.

I sent a message to myself to test the approval process but the message just went through
ChoiceMail will recognize that this message actually came from you and allow it through. Note that that only works if you sent the message out from the email application that is using ChoiceMail. If you try to send a message from your own email address but by using some other email connection that is not going through ChoiceMail, ChoiceMail will assume that someone is trying to spoof your own address and will quietly block the message.

My computer keeps dialing the internet even though I have closed my email application.
Even though you have turned off your email application, you have left ChoiceMail running and everytime it connect to the internet to get your email, your dialup connection is triggered.

Two suggestions:

  1. When you close your email program, please make sure that you EXIT ChoiceMail (how?)
  2. Change the refresh rate from the default 10 minutes to something like two hours (120 minutes) so that the connections occur less frequently.

I am using the Configuration Wizard but the NEXT button is disabled.
ChoiceMail requires you to test all accounts to make sure they are working properly. If you have imported more than one account, you need to test each one of them. Please see the section on the configuration wizard in the online help.

I downloaded the the retail version of ChoiceMail but I'm still seeing the trial version when I run it.
There are two possibilities here. First of all, make sure you copy the new version of ChoiceMail into the folder where you originally installed the trial version. During the copy operation, you should get a message about overwriting your previous version of ChoiceMail.exe. If you did not get that message, then you probably copied the file to the wrong folder. Also, if your original ChoiceMail was still running, then you would not be able to perform the copy as the file will have been in use. Make sure that ChoiceMail is not actually running.

Note that it's not sufficient to just "close" ChoiceMail by clicking on the X icon on the window title. You must actually click on the ACTIONS menu and select Exit.

I'm having trouble downloading ChoiceMail - I get errors such as "connection timed out" or my dialer disconnects before I have finished the download

Unless our server is down (in which case you would not be able to read this message), then the problem is most likely due to connection issues between your computer and your ISP - the next most likely possibility is a temporary internet routing problem between your ISP and our servers. If you are experiencing this kind of a problem, we highly recommend that you consider using a download manager (there are tons of them, type "download managers" into your favorite search engine to find one you like). Download managers can resume partial downloads and so survive failed connections.

I downloaded the ChoiceMail installer but when I try to install it, my system tells me it's corrupted. I tried downloading it again and it was still corrupted.

Other messages you may see are

" An I/O error occured while installing a file. this is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file."
or
"Corrupt installation file"

First, we have verified that the original versions on our servers are not corrupted.

We have determined that in most if not all cases, this problem is due to an incomplete download being cached by your ISP. Apparently, many large and well known ISPs store local copies of a file when it is first downloaded by one of their subscribers. This saves them bandwidth and generally makes good sense. The next group of people who download the same file get the cached version from the ISP rather than a fresh copy from our servers.

However, if the first person's connection closed prematurely, an incomplete version of the file remains in the ISP's cache and everyone else gets the broken version until the cached version expires at the ISP.

As far as we can tell, the only solution is to wait a while before trying again.

Also, before you do try again, do the following:

1) Delete the corrupted installer from your computer
2) Flush your browser's cache (memory and disk)
  • Internet Explorer: go to Tools | Options, then click on "Delete Files...." and click OK
  • Netscape: go to Edit | Preferences, then expand the Advanced node and click the "Cache" entry. Then click both the "Clear Memory Cache" and "Clear Disk Cache" buttons and then press OK on all dialogs to close them.

3) Close your browser
4) Reopen your browser and then start the download again to
get a clean copy of the installer.

You may also want to consider using a download manager (there are tons of them, type "download managers" into your favorite search engine to find one you like). Download managers can resume partial downloads and so survive failed connections.

I ordered the retail version on the web but have not yet received it
If your order was successful (and by the way, we thank you for it) you should receive an email confirmation within a few hours. If you have not received your email confirmation, please contact us through our web-based mail form. Select "Order or purchasing problems" as the topic.

  • That email confirmation contains the information needed to download the retail installer for ChoiceMail.

Once you have downloaded the ChoiceMail retail installer, simply double-click on it to begin the installation process.

If you already had ChoiceMail running in trial mode and you did not receive the email confirmation, check your New Senders list for an email message from someone at the digiportal.com domain. In the spirit of being fair to everyone, you should consider email even coming from us to be spam until you determine otherwise. In particular, if we forced our email address to always work, a spammer could then get to you by pretending to be us!

HELP...I am no longer getting any mail!
If you have installed ChoiceMail successfully, CM is downloading all your email to a private area on your PC....it's not lost. While dealing with this issue, do not uninstall or delete your ChoiceMail folders. Even if you temporarily stop using ChoiceMail, leave the folder structure intact.

This issue was fixed in version 1.227 and you should upgrade to the latest version of ChoiceMail if you are having this problem.

See this tech note for more information.

When I downloaded ChoiceMail, my browser wouldn't save it.
There are two possibilities. Check that you have sufficient permission to save the program and that you have sufficient space on your drive. Also, if you are downloading an update, make sure that you were not running a previous version of ChoiceMail while downloading the update.

Every time I start my computer, I get a message from ChoiceMail that says "License not Found"
Most likely, you were trying to uninstall the trial version of ChoiceMail while it was still running and the uninstall process could not continue. Download this little utility and run it once to fix the problem.

My mail program cannot connect to ChoiceMail
First, check that you have an account setup in your email application that has the incoming and outgoing mail servers set to server name 'localhost' (a single word without the quotes). This name represents your own machine.

Assuming you have configured everything correctly, the next most likely problem is that you are running a software firewall program such as ZoneAlarm or BlackIce Defender that is blocking access to the IP address 127.0.0.1. You need to update your firewall configuration to allow local connections to that address.

My computer crashes when I run ChoiceMail
We have only seen this problem on very old systems running early versions of Windows 95 or NT 4.0 The problem is invariably due to a down-level graphics device driver. Check the support area of the vendor of your graphics card and make sure you are running the most recent version of the graphics device driver for your video card.

My anti-virus program pops up twice when I send an email out
If you have your anti-virus program configured to check outgoing email, you may see this behavior because your anti-virus program is seeing two connections to port 25, the standard port used by SMTP (outgoing) mail servers. This is harmless. In Norton AV 2002, you can disable this popup dialog from the Options | Email settings in Norton.
